This study owes much to my PhD thesis project on Heliconius community ecology (1973-19878), supported in those years by many people, especially including my thesis advisor Larry Gilbert, Mike Singer, Gilbert lab students Carol Boggs, Craig Jordan, Paula Levin and others, and my former wife Nancy Kays (now deceased). The modern phase of the study (2010-2016) has been much more of a solo effort, except for two outstanding collaborations: genetic barcoding with Carlos Garcia-Robledo and flea beetle taxonomy with David Furth (both with the U.S.National Museum; thank you Carlos and David). I also owe a lot to La Selva Biological Station and its leaders Carlos Delarosa and Claudia Nocke as well as the entire staff, especially Ron Vargas, Orlando Vargas, Bernal Matarria, and Danilo Brenes who were always there when I needed help. Diego Dierick was also extremely helpful. Finally I owe huge thanks to my wife Kim Smiley, who lived with me at La Selva for over 15 months and helped with the project in many ways.
